DTN WEEKLY ROUND UP: Cash cattle trade held off until Friday again last
week, with Southern live deals ranging from $233 to $236.50, mostly $233 to
$235, generally steady to $2 higher than the prior week's weighted average,
basis Kansas. Northern dressed business had a range of $364 to $370, mostly
$370, $5 higher than the previous week's weighted averages. According to
Thursday's Daily Direct Slaughter Cattle Negotiated Purchase Summary reports
the weekly accumulated weighted averages were recorded as: KS
$231.70($232.92); NE $365.00($364.96); TX No Test; IA $363.96($363.60); CO
was not available due to confidentiality. (the prior week's weighted averages
are listed in parentheses).
The Friday afternoon Daily Direct Slaughter Cattle report lists week-to-date
trade volume totals as: KS 3,213; NE 19,175; TX 3,041; IA 16,078; and CO not
available due to confidentiality. According to the Daily Livestock and
Poultry Slaughter Report, Friday's slaughter totaled 84,000 head, 8,000 less
than the prior week, and 26,000 below a year ago. Saturday's kill was
estimated at 4,000 head bringing the weekly total to 535,000 head, 27,000
under the previous week, and down 59,000 from 2025. The weekly average for
boxed beef cutouts and boxed beef cuts: choice $366.32(+6.96), select
$361.35(+2.79), with an average choice/select spread of $4.97(+4.17), and a
total load count including cuts, trimmings, and grinds of 555(-60), (Changes
from the prior week are listed in parentheses).
For the week ending January 17, 2026, Imported Beef Passed for Entry in the
U.S. totaled 64,025, 115.00% of the previous week and 133.51% of the 4-week
average.
DTN MORNING COMMENTS: It will likely be a typically quiet Monday with both
Packers and Producers busy taking inventory and preparing for the week ahead.
Bids and asking prices have yet to be established, and significant trade
volume will likely be delayed until much later in the week. Beef cutouts are
expected to be higher with light box movement.
